In an all-too-common turn of events, Mussorgsky’s grandiose Pictures at an Exhibition far outstrips the original paintings’ fame—be there when the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra brings this masterpiece to life with Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Cellist Raphaela Gromes performs Schumann’s sublime and enigmatic Cello Concerto in her U.S. debut, and the concert opens with Schubert’s Overture to his romantic opera Alfonso and Estrella.

The second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 has achieved immortality as one of the most somber, yet simultaneously uplifting symphonic movements in the repertoire. Guest conductor Ward Stare takes to the podium to lead the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s complete masterpiece as well as Arnolds’s delightful Four Scottish Dances. Plus, FWSO Principal Horn Molly Norcross and tenor Paul Appleby unite to perform Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, a setting of six poems on the subject of night.

The FWSO has pulled out all stops for this concert: FWSO Artistic Partner Augustin Hadelich joins the orchestra to perform Bernstein’s Serenade, and Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the orchestra in RIFT: A Symphonic Ballet with Texas Ballet Theater choreographed by Kitty McNamee. Listeners can also enjoy Bel Canto: A Symphonic Canvas by visiting composer Jimmy López.

With the gentle, delicate strains of the violin and harp depicting one of the most famous storytellers of all time, Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra close the 2017-2018 Symphonic season with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a musical realization of the vividly colorful and mesmerizing tales spun by a storyteller at risk for her very life. The program opens with visiting composer Mason Bates’s Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, a work Bates describes as “teeming with strange creatures and wild sonic effects.”
