Prokofiev said of his Symphony No. 5: “I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamored for expression.” Be there when guest conductor and pianist Teddy Abrams leads the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 and plays and conducts Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major. The concert opens with Michael Tilson Thomas’s AGNEGRAM, a piece built from notes that spell out the name of a devoted San Francisco Symphony benefactor.

Enigma Variations

Australian conductor Nicholas Carter leads the orchestra in Elgar’s storied Enigma Variations, 14 charming and vivid sketches of his friends and acquaintances including the “Nimrod” variation. Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, scored for a unique arrangement of string instruments, opens the concert. Additionally, pianist Behzod Abduraimov performs Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

In an all-too-common turn of events, Mussorgsky’s grandiose Pictures at an Exhibition far outstrips the original paintings’ fame—be there when the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra brings this masterpiece to life with Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Cellist Raphaela Gromes performs Schumann’s sublime and enigmatic Cello Concerto in her U.S. debut, and the concert opens with Schubert’s Overture to his romantic opera Alfonso and Estrella.

The FWSO has pulled out all stops for this concert: FWSO Artistic Partner Augustin Hadelich joins the orchestra to perform Bernstein’s Serenade, and Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the orchestra in RIFT: A Symphonic Ballet with Texas Ballet Theater choreographed by Kitty McNamee. Listeners can also enjoy Bel Canto: A Symphonic Canvas by visiting composer Jimmy López.

With the gentle, delicate strains of the violin and harp depicting one of the most famous storytellers of all time, Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra close the 2017-2018 Symphonic season with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a musical realization of the vividly colorful and mesmerizing tales spun by a storyteller at risk for her very life. The program opens with visiting composer Mason Bates’s Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, a work Bates describes as “teeming with strange creatures and wild sonic effects.”
